A Little About ALTA

BACKGROUND

Within the Licensed Trade there are a number of companies providing accountancy services that are unregulated and those who are, but lack the specific industry knowledge to properly inform their clients.

Pub companies are providing the catalyst for change by driving procurement frameworks to appoint quality providers but this is a long, culture change process within the industry. Meanwhile publican and licensees are often working with service providers who, due to a lack of expertise in the industry, are unable to give best practice, appropriate consultancy and considered guidance. This can result licensed businesses receiving poor advice and support and often has a negative impact on the pub business as a whole.

• A small group of accountants originating from two pub company approved panels recognised these challenges and with interest and support from associated organisations such as British Institute of Innkeepers (BII) and the Association of Valuers of Licensed Property (AVLP), the Association of Licensed Trade Accountants (ALTA) was established in 2010.

The Association launch event took place in Worcester in May 2011 when keynote speakers from across the industry gave insight into the future of the licensed trade and how working together to drive professionalism and quality would ultimately benefit licensees, tenants, free traders and Multiple Operators.

ALTA is now driving forwards with membership recruitment, raising Association awareness in the industry as a whole and strengthening its partnerships with trade bodies, associations and other key stakeholders.
